School Environment
Children learn best when they feel safe. Siyawela offers programmes that help school communities create a safe and healthy learning environment.
This programme aims to educate teachers on exploring positive approaches to discipline, promoting healthy relationships and developing supportive classrooms environments.
This is an expansion of the Peer Mediation programme. Peace Clubs provide primary and high school learners with fun opportunities to learn peace-building concepts. The programme also fosters a culture of service at home, at school and in the community.
In this 10-module programme, learners are taught to use peaceful methods of resolving conflict situations in which they and/or their peers may be involved.
School Safety aims to support and mentor schools as they implement school safety initiatives in line with legislation and the National School Safety Framework (NSSF).
The Teacher Learner Care (TLC) programme focuses on providing an opportunity for teachers and School-Based Support Teams to become fully functional and equipped to deal with containing and referring young people with psychosocial challenges or difficulties at school.
It has become evident that ALL teachers need basic containing and referral skills when working in the school environment. The busy teacher, however, is hard-pressed for time to attend extended training programmes. Siyawela therefore offers professional development to schools and individuals in the form of 3 hour workshops (Psycho-Social First Aid) or a 3-day training experience (Psycho-Social Toolkit) during school holidays. This intervention is aimed at providing teachers with basic skills in containing learners who are in distress; identifying a problem; and then referring them accurately for additional support.
